How Do We Judge the Contest?

Here at AMV League, we do things a little bit differently.
Rather than having the judges argue over which videos should win awards, we instead use science* to decide each contest's winners.
Each video is scored on a 1-10 scale against various criteria, then those scores are totaled to produce the Overall Score. The judges' overall scores are combined, and the Combined Score determines which win awards in each of our three categories.

What Are The Categories?

Action

High-intensity videos, focusing on energy and movement. Brutal combat, high-speed chases, even sports or dancing! If it's hype, it's probably Action.
"Psiodyne" by AlbinoPlant
(Best Action, Ohayocon 2018)

Drama

Emotionally-driven videos, focusing on shock or sentiment. Sweet romance, tragic loss, and spine-chilling thrillers belong here. If it gives you The Feels, it's definitely Drama.
"Ashen Chords" by Xophilarus
(Best Drama, San Japan 2018)

Fun/Upbeat

Quirky videos  focusing on surprises and uplifting moments. Gut-busting comedy, cute slice-of-life, or even surreal, trippy videos are what this category's for. If it doesn't quite fit in to Action or Drama, it's probably Fun/Upbeat.
"Conquer Your Girl" by AntaresHeart07
(Best Fun/Upbeat, Anime Con Arkansas 2018)
  • If we feel your video would score higher in a different category than the one it was submitted to, we will reassign it.
  • If a contest receives less than three entries per category, or less than twelve videos overall, the contest will be considered an exhibition, and no prizes will be given. (If this happens, it will not count as one of your submission attempts.)

What Are The Scoring Criteria?

Any video submitted to an AMV League Qualifier will be judged in seven different metrics:
  • Concept/Originality: Does the AMV seem to have a coherent story or theme behind it? Is that concept clever or unique?
  • Emotional Appeal: Does the video evoke a sense of excitement or emotion?
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Are the audio and video of good quality? Does the video make use of filters, or impressive imagery to create a video that looks visually appealing?
  • Rhythm/Sync: Does what's happening on screen complement the audio? Is there "sync" in terms of character movement, their mouth flaps, or the cuts between shots?
  • Technical Prowess: Does the video take advantage of filters, visual tweaks, transitions, or other "special effects"? If so, are the effects executed properly, with no "glitches" or obvious errors?
  • Editing/Flow: Does the AMV feel cohesive, like the different scenes flow well into each other? Are transitions made in logical places? Do the cuts feel well-timed and snappy?
  • Rewatchability: Does the video stand up to multiple viewings? Are there small details or Easter Eggs that viewers can look for? Is the video memorable and compelling?
Every submission is scored from 1-10 on each of these metrics, and awards are given to the highest scoring video in each of our three categories.
